News values are general guidelines or criteria used by media outlets, such as newspapers or broadcast media, to determine how much prominence to give to a story. They are fundamental to understanding news production and the choices that editors and other journalists face when deciding that one piece of information is news while another is not.

Galtung and Ruge are two journalist that analysed international news stories to find out what factors they had in common, and what factors placed them at the top of the news agenda worldwide. The argued that news is structured according to unspoken values, rather than discovered.
Taking the new story that happened in Spain for intense. On the afternoon of 17 August 2017, 22-year-old Younes Abouyaaqoub drove a van into pedestrians on La Rambla in Barcelona, Spain, killing 13 people and injuring at least 130 others. Abouyaaqoub fled the attack on foot, then killed another person in order to steal the victim's car to make his escape. This news probably went worldwide, since it might have been associated with the terror attacks that previously happened in France Belgium and England.

Since is a large amount of people that were injured, it’s claimed to be newsworthy compared to a news that might have happened to an individual person. People may wonder why it’s such a big deal to be put on every newspaper since it’s not happening in the UK. However, Spain is a developed country and the news will be more covered rather than the news that may be much worse like the Somalia terrorist attack meaning is more favoured on “The West” which reinforces existing prejudice and “otherness”.

Terrorist have been threatening mainly European countries, which gives us a sense of uneasiness. In that case, this made the Spain attacks quite predictable. Journalist tent to cover stories that are likely to continue over a period of time, with news events unfolding. Journalist try to please all their audience so they balance this out with human interest.

  1. This is not a full essay and although you show a vague understanding of news values, you don't apply them in any detail to the news story you've chosen. The only value you discuss is proximity and ideology, but this needs to be made more explicit and you need to add many more examples from the chosen article. D- Vanessa
